The Clear Space: Why a Pediatrician Urges Coastal Bend Families to Reconsider the Family Bed

For Coastal Bend moms navigating the blur of newborn exhaustion, trading the temptation of bed-sharing for the ABCs of crib safety is the ultimate act of love—and protection.

The safest way for your baby to sleep is to follow the 𝐀𝐁𝐂𝐬:

𝐀lone,

on their 𝐁ack, and

in a 𝐂rib (or bassinet or pack and play).

I know it’s tempting to bed-share, especially when you’re desperate for sleep and they just want to be near you.

But the recommendation is to sleep in the same room on separate surfaces to ensure their safety.

Keep the sleep space clear of pillows, blankets, or bumpers, and check the height/weight limits on the label.

While it may look cozier with blankets, a clear space is a safe space. If you are worried about baby’s temperature, place them in a sleep sack.

Low stimulation at night—dim lights and quiet changes—helps babies learn the difference between night and day.

The exhaustion of the 3 AM wake-up call is real, but keeping them safe is your #1 job as their parent.

Safe sleep is the foundation for a healthy, growing newborn.

We want to do everything we can to reduce the risk of SIDS.

I know you’re doing your best to get some rest, but please stick to the ABCs.

You’re doing a great job keeping them safe through the long nights.

We’ll get through the newborn phase together.
